A Body-Centred Approach to Trauma

This workshop can serve as the prerequisite for the Hakomi Comprehensive Training and is also designed to provide experiential learning in Hakomi Methodology for professionals and graduate students of psychology or related disciplines.

After trauma the world is experienced with a different nervous system. The survivor’s energy now becomes focused on suppressing inner chaos, at the expense of spontaneous involvement in their life.”  Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma.

A Hakomi Introduction to Working with Trauma

Through lecture, demo, and practice exercises, this workshop will introduce you to Hakomi techniques and skills you can immediately use with clients experiencing trauma symptoms.

Learning Objectives:

  • the Hakomi Principles as they relate to working somatically with trauma
  • tracking and contacting non-verbal cues to traumatic content
  • utilizing the therapist’s own presence to support healing
  • understanding how to recognize and utilize body cues to restore physical and emotional regulation states from dysregulated states
  • identifying faulty neuroceptions following trauma and the embodied threat responses
  • ethical practice in physicalizing techniques for working with the physical trauma responses
  • self-caring strategies for therapists working with trauma
